Wood bathroom vanities

By admin | October 15, 2008

Wood gives the bathroom a warm, yet refreshing ambience and appearance. The neat thing about wood is that when combined with other materials, it can change the bathroom from rustic to avante garde.

Whether reminiscent of the Victorian era or just a solid contemporary finish, wood is a great contrast to any kind of countertop: acrylic, limestone, surgical glass, granite or marble. Black and white finish, glass top, Blum drawer slides and rectangle sink are the hallmarks of a modern bathroom.  Ornate carved moldings and doors are characteristic of much older vanities.

Kiln dried birchwood, honey oak or cherry wood that has been chemically treated will show the solid grain textures while being resistant to warping.

Orginal antique vs. antique design vanities

By admin | October 3, 2008

Antique design or “modern antique” vanities might sound oxymoronic but there is still a huge interest and demand for these kinds of vanities. Inevitably the topic of antique vanities will produce two camps: the purists who only want the real deal and the practical minds who have no qualms about purchasing a modern product designed to look old. It’s the furniture equivalent of the whole vinyl records versus digital music debate.

What it all boils down to is budget and choice.  An original antique is definitely many times more expensive than its antique-design counterpart.  But depending on size, design and material, antique-design bathroom vanities can cost as much as $3,000. The main advantage of antique-design vanities is its brand-new appearance. They may appear to look aged but there is no doubting their durability and integration of sink and faucet. They are also more suited to modern day plumbing. This will automatically save on restoration costs .

Of course nothing will beat an authentic antique. Bragging rights aside, just owning a piece of history will transport you to the time of old-world sensibilities. Oak, mahogany and cherry hardwood last a lifetime. Just like a fine wine, handcrafted antique vanities get better with age.

Double sink vanities

By admin | October 2, 2008

One trick to make your bathroom look bigger is to install a double sink vanity. This is especially true for large households with more than one bathroom.

Bathroom remodeling that includes a double sink vanity gives personal space to couples. When relatives and close friends drop by for a party, for example, it becomes even more useful.

What is spent on remodeling the space is offset by the amount of time saved doing the same things simultaneously such as brushing teeth, shaving and hand washing.

Double sink vanities are no longer considered a luxury with the pace of modern living. Space must be maximized so that cleansing rituals are performed simultaneously by family members. There is nothing more stressful than waiting outside the bathroom door because someone is washing their hands.

Double sink vanities do not require a really big a space to install. An open wall area is sometimes all you need for the base unit. A wall mounted mirror and cabinet for storage will help keep it clutter-free.  Marble, glass, stone, ceramic or wood are all elegant countertop finishes.

Corner bathroom vanities

By admin | September 24, 2008

If your bathroom space is limited, a corner bathroom vanity is a viable option.  But don’t fret if you think the location will look bad. Current models of corner vanities are stylish in design and color.

Corner vanities may be round, semi-circle or rectangular in shape with the pedestal mounted on the corner. Color selection is important because it creates the effect of the vanity blending seamlessly into the wall. A good color combination should also match the toilet, bathtub, tiles, walls and lights.

Maple wood, metallic, or glass are some of the current styles out now. A glass corner vanity is great against a white wall background. Tower racks, mirror and storage either behind the mirror or below the pedestal complete the whole corner vanity package.

Height and width of corner space should be measured properly to ensure proper fit.
